International Yacht Restoration School

The International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) is a private school on Thames Street in Newport, Rhode Island, that teaches boat and yacht restoration. The school also has a campus in Bristol, Rhode Island, that offers marine technology courses. Accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC), the school has a two-year certificate program, a continuing education program, and other educational programs.

In the late 1980s, Elizabeth Meyer's restoration of the 1934 J-class yacht Endeavour launched worldwide interest in the preservation of early 20th century nautical history.[1] In 1993, Ms. Meyer, artist John Mecray, and several other yachting enthusiasts founded the school on 2.5 acres (10,000 m2) of waterfront. Today, the school owns several large buildings, including the 1831 stone Newport Steam Factory building listed on the National Register of Historical Places. In 1995, the school acquired the famed 1881 yacht Coronet. As of 2009, students had restored and returned to the water more than 100 boats.
